SOME TIPS FOR PREGNANT WOMEN DURING RAMADAN
Every muslim wants to earn the maximum benefit from fasting in the month of Ramadan. Pregnant women are generally exempted but a lot of them still feel healthy enough to partake in this rewarding act. If this is you, you will need the following tips:
1. If you fear that you or your baby may be harmed by fasting, break your fast and make it up later or feed the poor.
2. Discuss with a trusted muslim doctor who knows your medical history and let them advise you to know whether you are eligible to fast or not.
3. Eat small portions of healthy foods regularly, between magrib and fajr. Always have an healthy snack by your bedside to munch on every two to three hours.
4. Have a sip of water, juice or milk until the end of sahoor. This will maintain your reserve and keep you hydrated throughout the day.
5. Avoid strenuous activities during the day. Delegate house chores and other duties. Take a break from work or choose flexible jobs if possible.
6. Take your prenatal vitamins, staggering them between magrib and fajr. Better still, choose a “all-in-one” capsule that meets all your needs according to your doctor’s advice.
7. You can go ahead and take your vaccinations, Rhogam, inhalers, eye/ear drops, vaginal suppositories, creams, and other medications that your doctor prescribes. These will not vitiate your fast because they don’t pass through the throat or provide nourishment.
8. Attend your regular antenatal appointments. Check your blood pressure, routine blood and urine tests, etc. These will not vitiate your fasting.
9. Eat a balanced diet for iftar and sahoor, including healthy and filling foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole cereals and dairy.
