It’s me again, Dr. Khadijah Folake Sanni-Tijani but you can call me Doctor KT for short. I’m a medical doctor, women’s health advocate, writer and author of NATURE’S SUPERFOOD – A COMPILATION OF TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL BREASTFEEDING.

Within a decade of medical practice in Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, I have noticed a huge gap in health literacy among pregnant women and nursing mothers. This level of ignorance contributes to the primary delay in seeking medical care, which often results in complications and sometimes, mortality.

According to the World Health Organization, the current Maternal Mortality Ratio of Nigeria stands at 814 per 100,000 live births. The lifetime risk of a Nigerian woman dying during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum or post-abortion is 1 in 22, in contrast to the lifetime risk in developed countries estimated at 1 in 4900.

We can meet the first target of the third Sustainable Development Goals (ie. reduce MMR to less than 70 per 100000 by 2030) if we empower women with the knowledge, support and resources that they need to stay healthy throughout the journey of motherhood. This is the reason why I have written a book that women can read to become well-informed and equipped with adequate knowledge at every stage of the journey.
