A LETTER TO MY IMAGINARY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW

Bismillaah…

Assalaam alaekum dear daughter.

1. Àjoké, you are welcome to this great institution of highest learning; MARRIAGE. Some of your friends must have scared you due to the bad experiences they have been through. Others must have told you about the goodies you were missing when you were still single. Your mother must have cried with you on your wedding eve. You must have heard the fibrillations in your father’s heart as he handed you over to my son. By now, your ears must be full of tonnes of information.

2. Well, Àjoké, I’m happy to inform you that you are the luckiest girl in the world. As your name implies, you are supposed to be pampered by all and sundry. Àrèmú, my son, is a complete gentleman maa shaa Allaah! He knows exactly how to treat a woman: like a diamond. He saw this growing up, modelled by his father. He has studied the biography of Rasoolullaah (saw), in whom is the best example. I’m sure he will apply everything he has learnt.

3. Àrèmú is my sweetheart, second only to his dad. But I promise you, I won’t bother you. I know where you’re coming from and the training you have had. I know your parents. I know you will be a darling just like your mother. I know you will love, honour, respect and obey your husband. You have nothing to fear as long as you’re a submissive wife. I won’t act like a toxic mother-in-law from hell. I will allow you to enjoy every minute of your nuptial life without looking through your windows.

4. Finally, Àjoké, you have a new mum now, and she is me. I am also your sister in Islam. Plus, guess what? My name is Àjoké too!!!

BaarakAllaah lakumaa wabaaraka alaekumaa wajama’a baynakumaa fee khair.
