When we leave the confines of our homes and meet neighbours and friends, we greet them with a pleasant smile. We don’t want to burden them with the troubles we’re going through. We don’t want to bore them with our sad stories: our failed relationships, our shattered dreams, our health challenges… We bottle up the tears and numb the pains. Why? Because we know that they have theirs too.
We are all struggling, pretending to be fine. We are all in need, pretending to be content. There’s no point laying your life bare to someone whose case is probably worse than yours. Lay it bare to your Creator. Keep the smile on when you meet the people. But cry out to your Lord when you are alone. Speak to Him, for He is The All-Hearing. Call on Him for He is the one who answers all calls. Trust in Him, for He is the one who knows what’s behind your smile, and what’s beyond it.
“And when My servants ask you (O Muhammad) concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me that they may be rightly guided.” (Quran chapter 2 verse 186)
