7 Times You Feel Compelled To Wean Your Baby (But You Don’t Have To)

  1. When he refuses to eat complementary foods at 6+ months:

You don’t have to stop breastfeeding to force your baby to eat other foods. Breast milk remains beneficial to him until 2 years or even beyond. Complementary feeding is also crucial for optimum nutrition. You just need to be patient and learn tricks to get your baby to accept anything you offer. Learn more here.

  1. When you get pregnant:

Pregnancy does not necessarily stop you from breastfeeding. Although, you may need to talk to your obstetrician to know whether you are eligible to continue tandem-feeding. Read more about this in my book, Nature’s Superfood.

  1. When you’ve been away for a few days and now you’re back:

Does breast milk go bad in your breast if you don’t nurse for some days? No! Can you resume breastfeeding after you come back from a long journey? Yes! This was also discussed in detailed in Nature’s Superfood.

  1. When the entire village will not stop asking you why you’re still breastfeeding:

Ignore whatever they say. It’s your baby. It’s your breast milk. It’s your choice. Focus on your goals darling!

  1. When your toddler starts practising gymnastics on your breast:

This is quite common but you need to let him understand that he should stay still while nursing. Give him a stern look and make him say “I’m sorry”. Then calm down and continue breastfeeding. You’ve got this!

  1. When he has a complete set of teeth and he won’t stop biting your nipples:

Again, set boundaries and let him know when he crosses the line. Gently tell him that biting isn’t cool. Pause for a while and let him feel sorry. Then, continue when you feel ready.

  1. When you get back to work after your maternity leave:

Unless you have taken two years off, you don’t have to wean your baby because you are back to work. I dedicated an entire chapter in Nature’s Superfood to discuss achieving successful breastfeeding even with a full-time job!
