I cry because I’m alive
I have a beating heart
that pumps blood into my tear glands

I cry because I can feel
the pain within and without
that pricks my skin
and tickles my emotions

I cry because I can see
the suffering of the people
and the transgressions on the land
and on the sea

I cry because I can hear
the contagious cries in the neighbourhood
the last cry of a dying mother
and the first cry of the orphan child

I cry because I can taste
the sweetness of faith
and the sourness of slipping into sin
when I’m heedless and lazy

I cry because I can smell
the fragrances of paradise
though far away in distance and time
I cry because I want it so much
I cry to my Lord to make it my abode.
