Recently, I was with a family of two kids: a girl and a boy, 15 and 11 years old respectively. All the while, the girl was actively doing one thing or the other. She’s not a maid ooo! She’s a bona-fide daughter of the family. In fact, she singlehandedly prepared dinner, washed the dishes and then, washed her and her brother’s clothes. For her age, I was impressed.
Feeling curious and irritated, I had to call the boy and asked why he wasn’t assisting his sister at all. His response was appalling.
“Am I a girl? Why should I be doing a girl’s work?”. Apparently oblivious to the gravity of what he just said, the girl smiled and continued what she was doing.
I have read authentic ahadeeth where the Messenger of Allaah (PBUH) was said to have helped his wives in doing household chores. Dear parents, please teach your sons how to help with chores. It’s sunnah and your future daughter-in-law will forever be grateful to you.
